The Truth About
Rewire Mess

We won't pretend a rewire is clean work — it isn't. Chasing cables into plaster walls and ceilings creates dust and some localised damage to décor. However, a good rewire team minimises unnecessary damage and leaves the property as clean as possible at the end of each day.

The good news is that most of the disruption is cosmetic and easily sorted with a plasterer and decorator after the job is done.

What Creates the Mess

Cable Chasing

Running cables inside walls requires chasing a slot in the plaster. We use a specialised chasing machine — because we're a specialist rewire company, this significantly reduces dust and mess compared to standard methods, and speeds the process up considerably.

Back Boxes

Every socket and switch requires a back box chased into the wall. We cut these out neatly to minimise the area that needs making good.

Loft Work

Running cables through the loft is clean work and causes no disruption to the rooms below.

What We Do to Help

We use dust sheets throughout and hoover up at the end of each day. Our specialist chasing machine dramatically reduces dust. All chases are filled with bonding and filler as part of the job, so they're ready for a decorator to work over — no bare cables or open channels left in your walls.

Making Good After
a Rewire

Do you fill and make good after a rewire?

Yes — all chases and back box holes we create are filled with bonding and filler as part of the job, ready for a decorator. If full walls need re-plastering (for example where old plaster has come away during the rewire), that would be done by a separate plasterer. We're happy to recommend local plasterers we work with regularly.

Will I need to redecorate?

Yes — most rooms will need some redecoration after a rewire, particularly where cables have been chased and filled. Many customers use the rewire as an opportunity to redecorate throughout.

How long after the rewire before I can decorate?

You should wait for any filler or plaster to fully dry before decorating — typically 2–4 weeks depending on the amount of work and conditions. Your plasterer will advise.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the mess?

Moving furniture away from walls before we start helps. Also clearing loft access and making sure we have easy access to all rooms speeds the job up and reduces the time the property is disrupted.
